Leek Cyclists' Club
Club Notes for the 15th March 2003
by Kel

No racing last week, we should be fielding 5 members for the M & D.T.T.A. this weekend YT being one so here s hoping for a bit of decent weather. Which is by some miraculous quirk what last weeks club run to Armitage had, Saturday’s being typically awful! Sundays ride also had the benefit of a tailwind from the café helping those who had overindulged at the Sherwood to scale the Wooton heights. Regulars Whiz, Graham Jones, YT, Kevin Sharrock, were in attendance joined by Graham Halden, Young Adam road-testing his recently built Dayton, Andy Bain on his first major outing, and Phil Gayes fresh from his skiing trip completing the members role call, however Phil Jones from Macclesfield Wheelers also tagged along tempted by the promise of a big breakfast. Mr Halden had to retire at Cheadle having made a brave attempt at fighting off some dreaded lurgy during the week, the stop however did allow myself who had back-tracked to meet up with Werrington wanderer Dave Gallimore who was to meet us en-route but having arrived at the meeting point before we did decided to retrace towards us only to discover that there is more than one way to get to the meeting point oops!
With the group fully together we continued on with Paul ‘Whiz’ Whiston commenting that we should call it the JCB run has we pass their sites at Cheadle, Beamhurst, Uttoxeter and Rugley on the way out and Uttoxeter and Rocester on the return leg. A slow puncture prevented Graham Jones from taking part in the customary burn up to the café, whilst a reluctance to exert myself prevented me. However unlike me Graham was in the thick of things on the way back. A rather spirited bunch Phil Gayes, Adam, Whiz, and Gray’ hurtled along the main road to Rocester, the pace barely easing as they disappeared towards Ellastone before stopping to regroup with the more sedate, but at 16mph average still respectable group containing YT, Kev, Andy, and Phil Jones who was starting to feel the true weight of an Armitage brecky beginning to struggle a little. This does not explain how Adam managed to down a special with no affect, it’s that youth thing again I suppose? Still we managed to get to Den Engel’s before last orders so all ended well.
Next weeks report will contain some racing honest!
